University of Hong Kong researchers reported an experimental stainless-steel alloy designed to withstand the corrosive, high-voltage conditions of water electrolysis. In tests using a 3.5% sodium-chloride solution, the alloy remained protected to about 1,700 mV and performed comparably with titanium structural materials in a salt-water electrolyzer, according to the report. The researchers attribute the result to a manganese-based protective layer that supplements chromium-based passivation at higher potentials.
