Google acknowledged a problem causing some Google Home Speakers to download large amounts of data in the background and said it is working on a fix, 9to5Google reported. One speaker tested by the outlet consumed 17 GB in 24 hours despite no voice commands or media streaming during the preceding day.

That device downloaded 41 GB on October 13 and 132 GB over 30 days. Excessive downloads could push households with limited plans past their data caps. The extent of the problem is unclear: another lightly used Home Speaker in a different household downloaded only 2 GB over the past month.
