New York's lawsuit against TikTok alleges that the platform gave some teens and children a nonfunctioning version of a safety feature intended to reset their recommendations. Experiments involved thousands of users who opted to use features such as Algo Refresh, TechCrunch reported, citing Reuters.

Those users believed they had activated the reset, but their feeds did not change, unlike those of users outside the experiment who received a functioning tool. The lawsuit is among more than two dozen state cases alleging addictive design and misleading safety representations. TikTok said it regularly tests products and features to understand how they work in real-world use.
