Anthropic says Sonnet 5.5 cuts task costs through lower token use

Anthropic announced Claude Sonnet 5.5 on September 28, claiming output speeds over 30% faster than Sonnet 5 and task costs up to 30% lower in its tests. The model completes the same work with fewer tokens, rather than through a reduction in API rates. Pricing remains $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Anthropic positions Sonnet 5.5 for well-defined work such as bug fixes, documents, slides and spreadsheets. Some published evaluations place it close to Opus 5.5, but the company says Opus remains stronger for complex, ambiguous tasks requiring sustained judgment.
