Volkswagen battery plant in Ontario delayed to 2029
Image: Primary Volkswagen subsidiary PowerCo has delayed its Ontario battery plant by two years to 2029, The Next Web reports, citing slower than expected demand and tariffs. The delay pushes back a North American source of battery cells while PowerCo's European production is already operating.
The company's Salzgitter plant in Germany has made cells since December, with initial capacity of up to 20 GWh a year and room to expand to 40 GWh. It supplies a new battery assembly facility at SEAT's Martorell site in Spain. Cell production in Valencia is scheduled to begin in July 2027, leaving the Ontario project later in the rollout.
