Global Energy Monitor's latest research puts US gas-fired power projects being developed exclusively for data centers at more than 189 gigawatts as of mid-2026, WIRED reports. The group had counted 97 gigawatts at the end of 2025 and 4 gigawatts in early 2024. Data-center builders have increasingly pursued behind-the-meter plants to avoid lengthy grid-connection timelines. The projects tracked include announced, development-stage and under-construction facilities rather than only operating generation.
