Researchers report that MISLAM, a system that estimates position and builds a map using inertial and magnetic sensors, reduced total endpoint closure error by 45.7% - 78.0% relative to magnetic-inertial odometry. The preprint evaluates the system offline on three indoor datasets collected with a handheld rig.

MISLAM combines an inertial measurement unit with nine magnetometers, using local magnetic-field models to estimate motion and a global model to correct drift. Under poor illumination, it maintained tracking after visual-inertial odometry failed, with a horizontal closure error of 0.332 m. Vertical drift remains a limitation, and the evaluation used a handheld rig rather than deployed field robots.
