Researchers report in an arXiv preprint that WayTrace guided a wheeled-legged robot on real-world missions of up to 1.37 km at about 1.1 m/s. The robot traversed a busy city centre, rural trails and a university campus, handling crosswalks, staircases and construction sites.

The system turns web-map directions, satellite maps and camera images into individual language commands. An onboard model draws a path in the camera image, and a control policy follows it. In simulated long-range missions, point-goal navigation baselines recorded about ten times more sidewalk or crosswalk violations; that comparison comes from simulation.
