Tokyo team tests stronger magnetic fields for spacecraft reentry braking
Image: Primary Researchers at Tokyo Metropolitan University built a ground-test system for magnetohydrodynamic aerobraking, using a pulsed electromagnet inside a small model struck by a shock wave traveling more than seven kilometers per second. The team reported magnetic fields of 1.24 and 1.58 tesla; the higher value was more than double that of conventional neodymium magnets. With the magnetic field on, the observed shock-layer self-emission was more than 15% thicker.
