# Active recap learning preprint reports gains in long-context understanding

Researchers report that active recap learning, a method that teaches language models to revisit earlier content, improved results by up to 129.7% on RULER and 11-13% on LongBench in a preprint.

The method uses continued pretraining to identify important tokens and relevant preceding paragraphs, then creates summaries of those paragraphs. During inference, models generate and use retrospective summaries to retain information across paragraphs. The researchers say code is available. The reported gains concern benchmark performance rather than a deployed service.
