SpaceX has announced an arrangement that gives it the right to acquire the automated programming platform Cursor for $60 billion or pay a $10 billion fee for their collaboration on artificial intelligence.

The deal was first reported by The New York Times and confirmed by SpaceX in a tweet. Under the arrangement, SpaceX and Cursor are working together to create what they describe as the world's best coding and knowledge work AI. SpaceX said the combination of Cursor's product and distribution with SpaceX's training supercomputer will allow the companies to build the world's most useful models.

The $10 billion alternative payment is framed as compensation for their joint AI work rather than a traditional breakup fee. CNBC and Bloomberg have reported that Elon Musk values his combined X companies at $1.25 trillion. CNBC also reported that Cursor was in the process of raising $2 billion in funding at a valuation of $50 billion.
