# Japan and US discuss chip plant GlobalFoundries could operate

Japan and the United States are discussing a semiconductor plant on US soil that GlobalFoundries is expected to operate, GCN reports, citing officials quoted by Nikkei. The proposed facility would make logic chips and could cost between 2 trillion and 3 trillion yen. Washington proposed the project as part of Japan's $550 billion investment program under the countries' tariff agreement.

Officials are discussing how the investment could be recouped. The proposal would extend the tariff program into chip manufacturing, but the governments have not settled the plant's location, construction schedule or financing structure, and they have set no timeline for a final decision.
