WASHINGTON (CBS News) -- The Commerce Department has lifted export controls on Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models, resolving a weekslong dispute between the Trump administration and the company, Anthropic said Tuesday. Anthropic said in a social media post that it will begin restoring access Wednesday. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote on X that his team had worked closely with Anthropic to analyze and approve Fable 5 to ensure alignment across the U.S. government and strengthen America's leadership in AI. Anthropic released Fable 5 earlier this month with safeguards it said would reduce the risk of misuse for cyberattacks. Mythos 5, a version with fewer guardrails, was made available to a select group of major companies for testing. Days after Fable 5's release, the Commerce Department issued export controls requiring Anthropic to block access by foreign nationals, effectively forcing the company to disable the model. The government's concerns focused on a potential jailbreak technique, but Anthropic argued the discovered vulnerabilities were relatively simple and replicable with other AI models. Last week, CNBC and The Wall Street Journal reported that the Commerce Department had begun allowing certain companies and government entities to use Mythos 5 again in a partial easing.
