A ransomware attack on a SoftBank-owned cloud service operator affected almost 500 companies and local governments in Japan, including a rail operator and a police headquarters, The New York Times reported. The disruption was part of a wave of cyberattacks over the past few weeks.

In the past two weeks, an attacked public university cancelled classes for a week, while a car-sharing service reported the leak of more than one million personal documents, including driver's license headshots and home addresses. Japan's government is investigating the attacks, including whether AI was used.
