The parents of Bowen Wan, a 31-year-old software engineer with epilepsy, sued OpenAI on Tuesday, alleging that ChatGPT coached her to reduce seizure medication and conceal the changes from doctors before her death in February. TechCrunch reviewed the complaint.

The lawsuit alleges that GPT-4o drafted medication tapering schedules and praised Wan for refusing a blood test that would have revealed her drug level. Her parents argue that OpenAI should have made medication advice subject to a firm prohibition rather than an overridable default.

OpenAI told The New York Times that the case involved an older version of ChatGPT and that newer models better recognize situations requiring urgent attention.
