A University of Science and Technology of China team verified entanglement between two atomic quantum memories separated by 420 kilometers of optical fiber, Phys.org reported. The researchers converted photons to telecommunications wavelengths and used stabilization to preserve the timing needed for interference. The article says the setup exceeded the theoretical limit for direct entanglement transmission without memory beyond 320 kilometers, making it the first demonstration that a memory-based quantum network can outperform direct transmission over long distances.
