Ledger broadens Asian wallet sales halt after hardware tampering

Ledger broadens Asian wallet sales halt after hardware tampering Image: Primary
Ledger ordered distributors in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to halt wallet sales and remove products from shelves while it investigates hardware implants that steal cryptocurrency recovery phrases, BleepingComputer reported. Ledger's security team said the separate implant captures a wallet's 24-word recovery phrase and transmits it over LTE using an eSIM. Because it does not change the Secure Element, operating system or transaction signatures, Ledger's integrity self-checks cannot detect it. Ledger says all confirmed fund losses involve CryptoBilis devices. Users have also reported compromised wallets from other sellers in Asia and Europe, and MediaMarkt has pulled the products from shelves.
