OpenAI announced this week that it is shutting down its Sora app and related video models six months after the app launched.

The move aligns with OpenAI's emphasis on enterprise and productivity tools ahead of a possible initial public offering. On the latest episode of TechCrunch's Equity podcast, hosts Kirsten Korosec, Sean O'Kane and Anthony discussed the decision as consistent with that strategy.

Korosec said the choice to end Sora showed a sign of maturity that was nice to see in an AI lab. She noted that companies can iterate quickly and end products that are not working without treating the outcome as a failure, even when real money had been spent on efforts such as a reported billion-dollar deal with Disney.

Anthony said the app itself had been unappealing because it amounted to a social network without people and consisted only of what he called slop. He added that OpenAI is winding down its video efforts more broadly because consumer social apps and video projects are not a priority as the company focuses on business, enterprise and programming products.

Sean said the app had never appealed to him and that the shutdown served as a reminder of the role of luck in ChatGPT's success. He noted that Sora had carried an assumption that OpenAI could repeat its earlier achievement and bring in partners such as Disney, but the outcome showed that other products require users to find real meaning for them to endure.

The hosts said the decision does not appear to be a major setback for the future of generative artificial intelligence.
