MediaTek announced today that it is collaborating with Starlink to support wireless emergency alert messages via satellite communication. Through this joint effort, more mobile users worldwide will be able to receive alerts from the Commercial Mobile Alert System, Wireless Emergency Alerts framework, and the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System. The services provide critical communications during natural disasters or other potential life-threatening situations.

MediaTek is demonstrating the Starlink Mobile service at Mobile World Congress 2026 on a device powered by the MediaTek M90. The company describes the M90 as the world's first 5G modem with integrated satellite technology. The demonstration features Direct to Cell service that utilizes the S-Band to deliver emergency information to mobile devices in a timely manner anywhere in the world.

The collaboration has already enabled Wireless Emergency Alerts services in the United States, Canada, and Japan. More than 4.4 million people have connected to Starlink Mobile during emergencies. JC Hsu, corporate senior vice president at MediaTek and general manager of the Wireless Communications Business Unit, said the solution solves the cellular coverage gaps that often occur during natural disasters and other emergencies and represents an important step for commercial deployment of standardized NR-NTN technology.
