Seattle council passes bill restricting personalized grocery prices

The Seattle City Council passed a bill that would prohibit sellers from using shoppers' personal data to vary prices for groceries and other essential items. The Fair Pricing and Transparency Act now goes to Mayor Wilson for a signature, Consumer Reports said. The proposal covers data such as browsing history, location and inferred income or health conditions. It would also require more transparency around discounts while allowing many discount practices to continue. Consumer Reports supported the bill and helped the mayor's office develop it; the restrictions would take effect only if the bill becomes law.
