# Google previews Prometheus-based autoscaling in GKE

Google has put built-in support for Prometheus metrics queries into preview for Google Kubernetes Engine autoscaling. Operators can use queries over metrics stored in Cloud Monitoring or Google Managed Service for Prometheus to trigger changes in workload capacity without running a third-party adapter.

The update lets teams scale services using measures such as message backlogs, request rates or response times. Google says the system checks the metrics backend every 15 seconds. Self-hosted Prometheus servers are outside the preview; Google plans to support them at general availability.
