The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed removing a federal public-notice and comment requirement for certain industrial air permits, leaving state and local agencies to decide whether to notify the public.

The proposal applies to New Source Review permits for so-called minor pollution sources, a process that has become a point of contention for data centers and power projects serving them. EPA says the affected sources have relatively low emissions and limited environmental impact. The public-comment period has ended, and the agency says it is reviewing more than 4,900 comments before finalizing any rule.
