# Linux Foundation Announces $12.5 Million in Grant Funding from Leading Organizations to Advance Open Source Security

The Linux Foundation announced 12.5 million dollars in grant funding from Anthropic, Amazon Web Services (AWS), GitHub, Google, Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and OpenAI. The grants will be managed by Alpha-Omega and the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), initiatives within the Linux Foundation. The funding will support the development of long-term security solutions for the open source ecosystem.

The organizations noted that advances in artificial intelligence are increasing the speed and scale of vulnerability discovery in open source software. Maintainers face an influx of security findings generated by automated systems. Alpha-Omega and OpenSSF will collaborate with maintainers to provide accessible security capabilities aligned with project workflows.

Michael Winser, co-founder of Alpha-Omega, said the organization has proven that targeted investment works and is now scaling expertise to hundreds of thousands of projects. Greg Kroah-Hartman of the Linux kernel project said OpenSSF provides resources to help maintainers triage and process increased artificial intelligence-generated security reports. Steve Fernandez, general manager of OpenSSF, said the effort focuses on empowering maintainers with tools and standards for preventative measures.
