Agents, meet the Figma canvas
Image: Primary Figma announced the beta release of its MCP server. The server brings Figma into the developer workflow to help large language models generate code informed by designs.
Claude Code, Codex and other MCP clients can generate and modify design assets that link to a design system. The new use_figma tool allows agents to operate on the canvas using a team's components and variables.
An existing generate_figma_design tool converts HTML from live apps and websites into editable Figma layers. The tools complement each other when designs fall out of sync with code.
Skills written as markdown files guide how agents build on the Figma canvas. They encode steps, guidelines and a team's specialized knowledge. No plugin or code is required to author a skill.
The foundational figma-use skill gives agents a shared understanding of Figma from its structure to its core principles. Several example skills from practitioners launched alongside the beta.
The capability is currently available for free during the beta period. It will become a usage based paid feature in the future.
