OpenAI announced Tuesday that it will soon shut down its Sora AI video-generation app. The company stated in a post on X that it is saying goodbye to Sora. It said more details will follow soon on timelines for the app and API along with options for preserving user work.

The closure of the resource-intensive service comes ahead of an expected initial public offering by OpenAI in the coming months. It also follows pressure from rival Anthropic, which has focused its systems on text and code generation rather than video tools.

OpenAI introduced Sora in 2024. A second-generation model debuted in September that added audio capabilities and more accurate physics. OpenAI then released a standalone app that quickly became the most-downloaded title in the iOS App Store Photo and Video category. Users created videos of characters such as Lara Croft, Mario and Pikachu.

In December, the Walt Disney Co. announced a three-year deal with OpenAI to bring many of its characters to Sora along with a planned $1 billion investment. Disney also said it would become a major customer for services including Disney+. In the wake of Tuesday's announcement, that deal is not proceeding, according to a source familiar with the matter.

A Disney spokesperson said the company respects OpenAI's decision to exit the video generation business and shift its priorities. The spokesperson added that Disney appreciates the collaboration and will continue to work with AI platforms while respecting intellectual property and creators' rights. Top OpenAI executives have said they are sharpening the company's focus because it cannot pursue everything at once, The Wall Street Journal reported.
