QuTech researchers have demonstrated the first cryogenic control chip capable of directly managing both electron and nuclear spins in diamond-based qubits. The innovation integrates a cryo-CMOS system-on-chip with nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond in a Fujitsu-funded project.

The new controller brings electronics into the cold environment. It generates the precise high-frequency signals needed for spin manipulation while consuming minimal power and occupying minimal space.

The integrated system reached quantum gate fidelities of 99.3 percent for electron spins and 99.8 percent for nuclear spins. Coherence times exceeded 50 milliseconds.

Digital adaptation to each qubit resonance frequency removes the need for magnetic field tuning. This supports parallel control of multiple qubits.

Masoud Babaie led the development with Fabio Sebastiano. The results will be presented at the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference in February 2026.

The Fujitsu and QuTech collaboration targets a full-stack blueprint for scalable quantum computing with diamond-spin qubit modules and cryogenic CMOS control electronics.
