A new study of corporate learning and development finds that companies spend 400 billion dollars annually on training while 74 percent report they are not keeping up with skill demands. The study, based on surveys and interviews with hundreds of companies, vendors, and leaders, examined current practices and the role of artificial intelligence.

Traditional training methods involve manually designing and publishing static courseware that requires regular updates. The study states that the skills challenge is one of dynamically sharing information rather than formal training.

AI-native systems generate content dynamically and make it available in multiple formats. One example platform builds new courses in days instead of months and updates the entire library when new content is added.

Employees interact with the system by taking courses, querying a supertutor, or requesting podcasts, videos, or infographics. The platform categorizes content into skills and infers skill levels from user activity.

The research describes a four-level maturity model. Companies move from static programs focused on compliance to scaled learning with various media, then to integrated development tied to roles and skills, and ultimately to AI-enabled dynamic enablement.

Early clients of such systems have seen 40 to 50 percent reductions in internal learning and development spending. The approach allows learning to embed into corporate chatbots and agents.
