The Hawesville Century Aluminum plant in Hancock County, Kentucky, has been sold to TeraWulf, which plans to redevelop the site into an AI data center, according to a press release. TeraWulf is known for bitcoin mining and high-performance computing, according to the company website.

The plant was idled in 2022 due to high energy costs but restarted production last August. Officials say the redevelopment is expected to create new jobs, both construction and permanent positions, and generate economic activity for the region.

Hancock County Judge Executive Johnny Roberts said the community and officials have more questions than answers. Roberts said they do not know the exact terms of permanent jobs or capital investment or what the project will mean for the community. Officials are seeking clear answers on water usage and electricity usage.

Roberts said the county is working to schedule a town hall open to the public by the end of the month so the company can answer questions from county officials and residents.

A Century Aluminum spokesperson said the Hawesville site has been dormant for nearly four years and the company is proud to see it transition to productive use. Century retains a 6.8 percent interest in the project as part of the transaction and remains connected to it. The company expects the project will bring billions in new investment to Hawesville, creating meaningful jobs and contributing to the local and regional economy.
