Prysmian and Rio Tinto to supply low-carbon cables for Amazon data center
Image: Primary Prysmian and Rio Tinto have partnered to supply electrical cables made with low-carbon aluminum for an Amazon data center in Ohio. The project gives their earlier work on aluminum made with ELYSIS inert-anode technology a specific data center application. Prysmian says the smelting process eliminates direct greenhouse-gas emissions and produces oxygen instead.
Prysmian says the cables will be made at its Sedalia, Missouri, facility and calls this the first known data center use of the material. The company has not provided a contract value, and ELYSIS-produced aluminum remains at an early stage of development.
