Rockstar Games Confirms Data Breach by ShinyHunters Hacking Group
Image: Primary Rockstar Games has confirmed a third-party data breach after the hacker group ShinyHunters claimed responsibility and issued a ransom demand with an April 14 deadline.
The company acknowledged that a limited amount of non-material company information was accessed through the breach, which targeted Rockstar's cloud infrastructure using stolen authentication tokens, according to Tom's Hardware.
A Rockstar spokesperson stated the incident had no impact on the company organization or its players, and that no sensitive company or player information was included in the compromised data.
ShinyHunters, a group linked to previous breaches at Microsoft, Google, and Ticketmaster, posted a message on its website warning Rockstar to pay or leak, threatening several annoying digital problems if the ransom is not paid. The group did not specify what data was obtained.
The incident comes after Rockstar suffered a major hack in 2022 when a teenager from the Lapsus$ group leaked gameplay footage and assets for Grand Theft Auto VI. That hacker was later sentenced to indefinite hospitalization.
Rockstar Games, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, has faced multiple security incidents in recent years as its high-profile game development has made it a target for cybercriminals seeking to monetize stolen intellectual property and internal materials.
