The Linux 7.0 kernel has merged support for three new keycodes designed for dedicated AI agent keys on upcoming laptops. The addition signals a hardware standard emerging for AI-specific input controls.

Google authored both the Human Interface Device specification and the kernel patch implementing the new keycodes. The keys are intended to provide quick access to AI assistants and agents directly from hardware buttons.

The development follows Microsoft's introduction of the Copilot key on Windows PCs in 2024. Linux's adoption of similar functionality ensures cross-platform compatibility as manufacturers begin building AI keys into laptop hardware designs.

According to Tom's Hardware, the keycodes represent an expansion beyond single-purpose AI buttons toward multiple distinct functions. This could enable laptops to provide separate keys for different AI agents or actions.

The kernel change prepares Linux distributions for the next wave of AI-integrated hardware expected to hit the market in late 2026. Device manufacturers now have a standardized way to map physical AI keys to software actions across Linux environments.
