Waymo estimates 841 injury crashes avoided across 271 million driverless miles
Image: Primary Waymo says its driverless vehicles avoided an estimated 841 crashes that would have caused injuries across 271 million miles driven through June. Its newly released figures compare crashes in its operating areas with expected outcomes for human drivers and show an 82% reduction in injury crashes and a 95% reduction in crashes causing serious injury or worse.
The company estimates that 175 of the avoided injury crashes would have involved pedestrians, cyclists or motorcyclists. The figures are modeled comparisons, and Waymo's driving remains concentrated in limited operating areas rather than the full range of U.S. roads.
