The Minneapolis City Council is set to vote Thursday on an ordinance that would require licensed human safety monitors, paid minimum wage, in driverless rideshare vehicles, MPR News reported. The proposal advanced from committee Tuesday on a 7-4 vote and would take effect in October 2027 if passed.

Mayor Jacob Frey has criticized the measure and could veto it; supporters would need nine votes to override him. Local authority to regulate autonomous vehicles remains unclear after state legislation failed. Waymo is testing vehicles in the Twin Cities with humans behind the wheel and is not yet taking customers.
