Agility Robotics has launched Digit 5, a humanoid robot engineered to lift 23-kilogram bins onto high shelves, its cofounder writes in IEEE Spectrum. He says its battery supports 90 minutes of operation on a 9-minute charge, targeting repeated heavy warehouse tasks.

The company's 70,000-square-foot RoboFab facility has capacity to produce more than 10,000 Digit 5 robots per year. Commercial requirements have pushed the design toward a heavier, bulkier machine rather than the graceful movement its cofounder originally envisioned. He also says keeping early deployments operational consumed enough effort to arguably eliminate their profit.
