NASA plans to order two additional crewed Boeing Starliner missions as early as next week, help cover repairs to the spacecraft's thrusters and support certification on a replacement for the retiring Atlas V rocket, Gizmodo reported, citing Ars Technica's sources. The commitment would position Starliner to help carry crews after SpaceX retires Crew Dragon.

Starliner must first complete an uncrewed mission before certification for five subsequent crewed flights. Its launch target remains under review after helium leaks and thruster failures caused its 2024 crewed test capsule to return without its astronauts, and Boeing's program losses exceeded $2 billion in 2025.
