Investigation traces connected-car data to insurers, lenders and brokers

An investigation by Consumer Reports and Northeastern University researchers found that connected-car driving data reaches insurers, lenders, data brokers and government agencies. Researchers examined thousands of pages of privacy policies, questioned 15 automakers and reviewed corporate, regulatory and legal filings from businesses supplying insurance technology. Drivers may consent through forms displayed when they first use a vehicle's infotainment system or connected mobile app, without understanding what they accepted. Recipients include partners in exchanges compiling driving data on millions of drivers and brokers creating personalized risk scores.
