# Turbo Haskell prototype can compile GHC and run Haskell on the JVM

Developer Edward Kmett says his Turbo Haskell compiler prototype can now compile GHC itself and run Haskell programs on the Java Virtual Machine. The code is available on GitHub with build and usage documentation.

GHC handles parsing, type checking and optimization; Turbo Haskell then compiles and executes the resulting intermediate code using Truffle and GraalVM. It also supports producing standalone executables and calling libraries written in Python, Ruby, R and JavaScript.

Performance remains unsettled: Kmett reports a roughly 10× regression on some easy benchmarks during recent development. Whether stack growth on non-tail-call paths remains bounded relative to GHC has not yet been tested.
