Defense Department components disabled advertising tracking on government-issued iPhones, Android devices and Windows computers, according to a letter shared with Sen. Ron Wyden. The Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Special Operations Command made the change to reduce risks that adversaries could use app-derived commercial location data to identify troops. Reuters reported the protections were rolled out earlier this year, with Air Force changes in July.
