A U.S. District Court in Oregon ordered the U.S. government to restart approving wind projects after the Department of Defense stopped taking part in a legally required review process, Ars Technica reported.

Ars said all new U.S. wind development has been on hold since August 2025, when DoD stopped a process that lets it require project changes to limit radar interference. Judge Karin Immergut ruled that national security claims did not let DoD opt out of the congressionally mandated framework.

According to the decision as summarized by Ars, DoD first refused to sign negotiated agreements, then stopped drafting them, and later refused negotiations entirely. The court rejected venue, finality, and standing defenses and ordered DoD to resume reviews on the statutory schedule and report progress every 30 days.

The Trump administration has also cited radar and drone-related security concerns against offshore wind, Ars reported, and has paid some companies not to pursue wind projects after courts rejected earlier blocks.
