Expo, the company behind a popular open-source framework for building cross-platform applications, has raised $45 million in a Series B funding round. The investment was led by Georgian with participation from Leadout Capital, A Capital and Red Swan.

The company's framework helps developers build applications for iOS, Android and web using React Native, a Meta Platforms library that extends the React web framework to mobile platforms. By enabling developers to write everything in JavaScript rather than separate languages for each platform, Expo aims to save significant development time.

Expo generates revenue through paid cloud services that automate development tasks, including a build service that performs hardware-intensive compilation in the cloud. The company also offers hosting for server-side components and a new AI-powered programming assistant called Expo Agent that provides coding tips, bug fixes and integration help.

Company co-founder and CEO Charlie Cheever said Expo is positioned to solve problems with "agentic app development" where business-critical apps fail to reach production. The company plans to use the funding to enhance its AI tool, speed up its build service and add more third-party integrations.
