Twenty-five Fields Medal-winning mathematicians signed an open letter arguing that AI labs racing to solve famous math problems threaten the intellectual work of the field.

The signatories said solutions are often announced in a rush, leaving no time for proper writeups, isolation of new methods, or citation of prior work, and that OpenAI's proof remains unverified. The letter follows a week in which NYU professor Tristan Buckmaster accused OpenAI of pressuring him not to credit an Anthropic-employed collaborator, and OpenAI withdrew sponsorship of a CalTech math event after researcher criticism.

The signatories warn of severe attribution and plagiarism questions and say frontier labs can spend tens of millions of dollars using LLMs to beat original researchers to a proof, incentivizing secrecy.
