The Federal Aviation Administration announced Thursday that it has begun replacing four air traffic control systems dating to the 1980s, Gizmodo reports. Its Enterprise - Information Display System combines equipment issues, traffic conditions, weather, and advisories, allowing controllers to share critical alerts digitally.

The first five facilities include airports in Atlantic City, Nashville, and Rochester, plus processing hubs in Atlanta and Salt Lake City. The FAA plans deployment at 435 sites by the end of 2028, with its installation deadline moved from September 2034 to September 2028.

The Government Accountability Office warned in September that the broader modernization effort lacked a comprehensive lifecycle cost estimate and coordinated master schedule, increasing risks of disruptions, delays, and budget overruns.
