New York City weighs mandatory validation before AI models can be sold

New York City weighs mandatory validation before AI models can be sold Image: Primary
The New York City Council considered 10 AI bills at a Monday hearing, including a proposal to prohibit marketing, selling or deploying an AI model in the city without third-party validation, The Next Web reported. Speaker Julie Menin's lead bill would also require a way for a human to shut the model down. Validators would assess task performance, data privacy and safety. Each instance of a model offered without the requirements would carry a $25,000 civil penalty. The bill would take effect 180 days after becoming law. Other proposals would allow lawsuits over foreseeable harm from third-party misuse and require city contractors and agencies to report AI safety incidents within 24 hours.
