US and European bank regulators press lenders on AI controls

US and European bank regulators press lenders on AI controls Image: Primary
US and European banking regulators are pressing lenders to strengthen controls over AI agents and prepare for AI-enabled cyberattacks, Reuters reported, citing six people familiar with the matter. The Federal Reserve and two other US regulators are questioning banks about Chinese-built technology, autonomous systems, human oversight and shutdown procedures. The European Central Bank has given lenders until the end of October to produce plans against AI-enabled cyber threats. Eurozone banks are also being asked to map AI use, including through suppliers, so systems can be stopped and restarted safely. UK supervisors want the largest banks to review backups fully separate from their main IT systems, favoring cooperation over new rules.
