The U.S. government is reportedly alerting millions of current and former military personnel and staff that their personal information was stolen, TechCrunch reported. A Defense Manpower Data Center notification says unauthorized users exploited a file-sharing vulnerability between October 2025 and mid-July 2026.

The notice describes unencrypted records containing Social Security numbers, names, birth dates and military service information. Pentagon officials put the affected population at about 2.8 million living people and close to 300,000 deceased people. The Defense Department says it has no indication of misuse.
