# Amazon Neptune adds storage reclamation without database downtime

_Published Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at 10:10 PM EDT · Infrastructure, Products · Latest · Tier 2 — Notable_

Amazon says Neptune Database now lets administrators rebuild indexes and reclaim unused storage while read and write queries continue on the writer instance and read replicas. Inserts, updates and deletions can leave gaps in data pages, increasing storage use and input/output costs and degrading query performance.

Administrators can rebuild all indexes or select quad or dictionary indexes. Concurrency and write buffer settings let them balance rebuild speed against workload impact. The feature is available from engine release 1.5.0.0 on provisioned writer instances in every region supporting Neptune Database.
