A California federal grand jury has indicted Russian national Searzhudin Tamirlanovich Aktulaev over a phishing campaign that allegedly used 255 fake accounts to send malicious Excel attachments to 80,000 freelancers in 2016 and 2017. Court documents say the attachments installed TVRAT or DarkVNC malware, giving operators remote control and enabling data theft. Aktulaev was extradited from Cyprus and is in federal custody. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
