Anthropic released Claude Opus 5 on Thursday, a new AI model the company said is geared toward everyday business needs and includes a feature letting users toggle between low, medium or high effort levels to balance cost and capability.

The company said the model verifies its own work and recovers from errors without intervention, requiring less back-and-forth than its predecessors. Anthropic said Opus 5 comes close to the capabilities of Fable 5 at half the price, though it still recommends Fable 5 for more advanced projects that may run autonomously for days.

The release follows Mythos 5, Fable 5 and Sonnet 5 in June. Fable 5 was temporarily subject to U.S. export controls and pulled from the market on June 12 before being re-released on June 30 with fortified security. Business customers had criticized Fable 5's high token burn rate, which led to large bills.

On safety, Anthropic said Opus 5's safeguards are similar to Opus 4.8 in most areas but stronger in cybersecurity. The company said the model is its most aligned Opus model and least susceptible to being tricked into misuse. Anthropic also called Opus 5 its most capable generally available model for scientific research, particularly in biology.
