Researchers reporting in Nature demonstrated Airscope, a 1.0 gram wireless microscope that records activity from more than 8,500 neurons per mouse without a tether, a 25-fold increase in neuron yield. The device provides 4 μm lateral resolution across a 6 mm field of view at 12.5 Hz.

An aspheric lens shortens the optical assembly, while battery power, onboard storage and a wireless link enable recordings during movement and social interaction. The researchers simultaneously recorded 21,397 neurons across five mice and used two devices on one mouse to record cortical and spinal cord activity together. These demonstrations establish recording capabilities in mice.
