Researchers at the University of Surrey and the Animal and Plant Health Agency developed an AI workflow that detects rabies infection in cell cultures and measures antibody concentrations. In a study published in Scientific Reports, the best-performing model correctly classified 99.6% of samples.

The team trained models using more than 2,300 fluorescence images containing over 36,000 annotated sections. The workflow addresses tests that currently require specialists to examine thousands of microscope images manually. Detection in infected brain tissue is still under development.
